How much does a Bernese Mountain Dog cost in Colombia?
By Casa Trufa ·
In October 2026 the Colombian websites we checked publish very wide ranges for the Bernese Mountain Dog (Bernés de la Montaña): from COP 1,700,000 to COP 6,500,000 in one case and from COP 4,300,000 to COP 12,000,000 in another. These are third-party figures, and they are not very consistent with each other. What weighs most in the long run is the cost of keeping one.

This is what others publish. We read it on October 7, 2026 and left each figure with its source so you can check it.

Why does the price of a Bernese Mountain Dog vary so much?
- Hip and elbow X-rays
- The ACCC requires them for the breed’s parent dogs, with a diagnosis valid from 18 months of age. In a dog of 36–50 kg (79–110 lb), dysplasia is the difference between a comfortable life and a painful one.
- Genetic tests
- Degenerative myelopathy (DM) and risk markers for histiocytosis. Ask about them: whoever has them shows them.
- Raising a giant dog costs more
- The mother eats more, the puppies eat more and they take up more room. Part of the price difference with a small breed is simply that.
- The climate where it is bred
- A Bernese raised in the cool highlands grows up in the climate it belongs in. Ask where it was born and where the mother lives.
Which health tests should the parents have?
- Hip and elbow dysplasia (official X-rays)
- Degenerative myelopathy (DM)
- Histiocytosis (genetic risk test)
- Eye exam
Each with a date, a laboratory or clinic, and a document. Our parent dogs’ results are published in Meet the parents.
What should be included, whatever the price?
- A vaccination record with the doses due for its age, signed by a veterinarian.
- Internal and external parasite treatment up to date.
- A recent veterinary health certificate.
- A written contract, with the terms of the legal guarantee (Colombia’s Law 1480 of 2011).
- Both parents’ health tests, with date, laboratory and document.
- A stated handover age: at Casa Trufa, never before eight weeks.
- Support after the puppy goes home.
What are the warning signs in an ad for a Bernese Mountain Dog?
- Handing it over without asking which city you live in: it suffers in the hot lowlands.
- Parents without X-rays, or under 18 months old.
- Price ranges that change without explanation within the same ad.
- A figure far below those in the table. In July 2026 Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía) warned that a price far below the market is the first sign of an online pet scam.
And after the puppy?
The puppy is the small expense. As a rough guide, the business press puts the cost of keeping a dog in Colombia at between COP 2,400,000 and COP 5,000,000 a year; we read the figure in the search engine’s summary. Food, parasite treatments and medication are calculated per kilo, so factor in the breed’s adult weight.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to keep a Bernese Mountain Dog?
More than almost any other breed, because everything is calculated per kilo: food, parasite treatments, medication and anesthesia. As a general reference, the business press puts the annual cost of a dog in Colombia at between COP 2,400,000 and COP 5,000,000; a Bernese is at the top of that range or above it.
Why are Bernese prices so different from one another?
Because the ads mix puppies with and without registration, with and without the parents’ X-rays. On a single page we saw two different ranges with no explanation. Always ask to be told in writing what the figure includes.
