Reservation and contract terms

This page explains how an agreement about a puppy is reached and what must be put in writing. In legal terms, handing over a puppy in exchange for a price means selling it — a contract (compraventa) to which Colombia’s Consumer Statute (Law 1480 of 2011) applies; in practice, for us it starts much earlier, with a conversation.

1. How it goes, step by step

  1. You tell us how you live. By WhatsApp or with the quiz. No commitment for anyone.
  2. We guide you on the breed, also when the answer is that none of ours fits.
  3. Waiting list. Free unless stated otherwise in writing; it does not guarantee a puppy or a date.
  4. Matching. When there is a litter, we propose to each family the puppy that fits it most closely. You can say no and stay on the list.
  5. Written agreement and handover, never before the puppy is eight weeks old.

2. The contract

The conditions of each handover are put in writing before any payment. Always ask for that written document: it is the one that governs, and the proof of what was agreed.

A contract of this kind should state, as a minimum:

  • who hands over and who receives, with name and identification;
  • which puppy it is: breed or cross, sex, date of birth, color and microchip number if it has one;
  • who its parents are and, in breeds with a pedigree, its registration; in a cross (Maltipoo, Cockapoo), that it has no pedigree;
  • the total price, what has already been paid and how the rest is paid;
  • the date and form of handover, and who bears the cost of transport;
  • the state of health at handover, the vaccines and deworming treatments given and the veterinarian who certifies them;
  • the guarantee: what it covers, how long it lasts and how to claim under it;
  • what happens if the family can no longer keep the dog.

3. Deposit to reserve a puppy

Whether or not a deposit is requested to reserve a puppy, and what happens to it if either party backs out, is stated in writing before any payment. Do not hand over money without that written document.

4. Price and payments

The price for each litter is given by WhatsApp, is not published on the website, and includes whatever the contract states. The payment methods are stated in writing together with the conditions. Payments are made in the name of the responsible party identified in the legal notice: do not pay into third-party accounts or to a name other than the one shown in your contract. Always ask for proof of payment.

5. What must come with the puppy

The puppy is handed over with the documents stated in the contract. What we recommend demanding from any breeder, and the minimum that ours must include:

  • A vaccination and deworming record up to date for its age, signed by a veterinarian.
  • A veterinary health certificate, recent if the puppy is going to travel.
  • A copy of its parents’ health tests, the same ones published in Meet the parents.
  • In breeds with a pedigree, its registration details. A cross does not have one.
  • Feeding instructions and guidance for settling in during the first days.

6. When we may decline to hand over a puppy

  • If the puppy is not in a fit state of health to leave the house on the planned date: the handover is postponed and another date is agreed.
  • If what we know about the family’s situation changes in a way that means the handover is not in the animal’s interest.
  • To minors, or as a surprise gift for someone who has not decided to live with a dog.

In those cases, whatever had been paid for that puppy is returned.

7. If you can no longer keep the dog

Abandoning an animal is conduct penalized by law (Law 1774 of 2016 and Colombia’s National Code of Security and Coexistence, the Código Nacional de Seguridad y Convivencia). If at any point you can no longer keep the dog, write to us before deciding: we will help you look for a responsible way forward. What each party undertakes to do in that case is set out in the contract.

8. Guarantee, returns and claims

These are in the guarantee and returns policy. The channel for any claim is hola@casatrufa.com (see PQRS).
