Living with a Maltipoo
Feeding, health and care, step by step
Feeding a puppy by age and size: how many meals a day and which food to choose
From four meals a day down to two, what to look for on the food label, and why calcium matters in large breeds and blood sugar in very small puppies.
Genetic tests in dogs: what CEA, TNS, MDR1 and PRA are and how to read the result
A DNA test tells you whether a dog carries the mutation for an inherited disease. What clear, carrier and affected mean, which tests apply to each breed and what a cheek swab cannot tell you.
Dog coat care by coat type: brushing, bathing and trimming
Long and silky, curly, feathered, double, or short and dense: each coat calls for different brushing, bathing and trimming. And a double coat is never shaved.
Our parent dogs’ health tests
Every parent has health tests you can see and verify.
The pages of this breed’s parent dogs, with their tests and documents, are published in Meet the parents.
Climate and life in Colombia
Does your city suit a Maltipoo?
It adapts to every climate zone. In the hot lowlands a short clip is a good idea, and so is staying out of the midday sun; in the cool highlands, dry it completely after a bath and give it a coat to wear if its own is kept very short.

Frequently asked questions
What we are asked most about the Maltipoo.
How much does a Maltipoo cost in Colombia?
Colombian breeders’ websites checked in October 2026 advertise figures between COP 2,200,000 and COP 5,500,000. A figure far below that range is a warning sign: in July 2026 Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía) warned that a price that is too low is the first clue to a scam. Casa Trufa tells you the figure for each litter on WhatsApp.
Do Maltipoos shed? Are they hypoallergenic?
They shed very little, but because this is a cross the coat varies from one puppy to the next: the curlier it is, the less it sheds. No dog is one hundred percent hypoallergenic. In exchange for shedding little, a Maltipoo needs frequent brushing and a groomer every six to eight weeks, because hair that does not fall out tangles.
Is the Maltipoo a breed with a pedigree?
No. It is a Maltese × Poodle cross that the FCI does not recognize and that cannot be entered in the stud book of the ACCC (Asociación Club Canino Colombiano, Colombia’s FCI member kennel club). Anyone offering a Maltipoo “with pedigree” is saying something that cannot be true. What you can ask for are the parents’ health tests and registration.
How big does a Maltipoo get? Is there a “teacup” Maltipoo?
An adult Maltipoo usually weighs 4–7 kg (9–15 lb) and stands 25–35 cm (10–14 in) tall, depending on the size of its parents. “Toy”, “mini” and “teacup” are commercial labels, not categories: in a cross nobody can guarantee size. The most reliable clue is to see the mother and the father, which is why we show them.
Is it a good dog for an apartment and for children?
Yes. It is a small dog with moderate energy that lives well in an apartment if it goes out for a walk and plays every day. It usually gets along well with children; with the youngest ones it needs supervision, because the fragile one is the dog. What it copes with badly is many hours alone.
“A dog is not just a pet; it is a companion for life. That is why every decision matters.”
