Will the AKC register a dog from Colombia? FCI and ACCC pedigrees explained

By Casa Trufa ·

It can. The AKC says the FCI is not an accepted registry, because it is a federation of national registries. But its list of accepted foreign registries includes the Asociación Club Canino Colombiano (ACCC). A dog of an AKC-registrable breed, registered with the ACCC and living in the United States, can apply with a three-generation pedigree and matching ownership.

Does the AKC recognize FCI pedigrees?

Not “the FCI” as such. In its frequently asked questions on foreign registration, the American Kennel Club says the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) is not an acceptable registry: it does not consider it a registry at all, but an organization made up of individual national registries, each with its own pedigrees.

That sounds like a no, and it is often repeated as one. It is really a statement about who issues the document. There is no such thing as a pedigree issued by the FCI; there is a pedigree issued by a national kennel club. The AKC decides registry by registry, and the question to ask is whether the kennel club of the dog’s country of birth is on its list.

Is Colombia’s kennel club on the AKC’s list of accepted registries?

Yes. The AKC’s Special Registry Services brochure lists the foreign registries it accepts, country by country, and for Colombia it names the Asociación Club Canino Colombiano, in Bogotá. That is the ACCC, Colombia’s kennel club and the organization the FCI lists for Colombia.

So an “FCI pedigree” from Colombia is, in practice, an ACCC pedigree, and the ACCC is a registry the AKC accepts.

Registry rules change, and so do the rules for taking a dog across a border. Everything on this page was checked against the kennel clubs’ and authorities’ own pages on October 10, 2026. Confirm the requirements with the AKC, the ACCC and, before any trip, with the authorities and the airline. This is general information, not legal or veterinary advice.

What does the AKC ask for to register a dog born in Colombia?

According to the AKC’s pages on Special Registry Services and online foreign registration:

  • A breed the AKC registers.
  • The dog is physically in the United States.
  • Registration in the country of birth, with a registry on the AKC’s list — for Colombia, the ACCC.
  • A complete, certified three-generation pedigree, with the names and registration numbers of the ancestors, and a registration certificate with no restrictions, both translated into English.
  • The same ownership on the AKC application as in the foreign registry.
  • Permanent identification: a microchip, a tattoo or a DNA profile.
  • Two color photographs of the dog.

The AKC adds that an export pedigree may be required if the dog has been imported into the United States. And every dog born abroad and registered since March 1, 2006 needs an AKC DNA profile before its first registered litter.

The ownership condition is the one that catches people out. If the ACCC’s records still show the breeder as the owner and the AKC application shows you, the two do not match. Ask the ACCC how a change of owner is recorded, and get it done before you apply.

Can a Maltipoo or a Cockapoo from Colombia be registered with the AKC?

No. Both are crosses, not recognized breeds, so there is no AKC registration for them, and no ACCC pedigree either. A document that calls itself a Maltipoo “pedigree” is not one in this sense. What you can ask for instead is explained in is a Maltipoo a breed, and does it have a pedigree?

Does the UKC accept a pedigree from Colombia?

Possibly, but we cannot confirm it. According to the United Kennel Club’s Single Registration requirements as of October 2026 — a page we only saw as a search-engine extract — the UKC recognizes the registration certificate of any FCI-affiliated registry, together with a three-generation pedigree. The ACCC appears on the FCI’s site as the organization for Colombia; we did not read in which membership category, or whether the UKC draws a distinction between categories. Ask the UKC directly.

Does the Canadian Kennel Club recognize the ACCC?

We do not know. The Canadian Kennel Club registers dogs born abroad when they come from a registry whose stud book it recognizes, and that list is in its policy manual, which we were not able to read. Ask the CKC in writing.

There is a prior question, though. According to the CFIA’s notice, commercial dogs from countries at high risk for dog rabies — Colombia among them — have been prohibited from entering Canada since September 28, 2022, and for the CFIA commercial purposes include transferring a dog to another person, breeding and showing.

Can the dog get to the United States in the first place?

Registration comes after the journey, because the AKC requires the dog to be in the United States. And the CDC requires every dog to be at least six months old on entry, with a much longer list of conditions for a dog vaccinated in Colombia. A young puppy cannot make that trip. The details, by destination, are in taking a dog from Colombia to the US, Canada or Europe.

What should you ask a breeder in Colombia about the pedigree?

  • Ask to see the ACCC pedigree of both parents, and note their registration numbers.
  • Ask whether the litter will be registered with the ACCC, and in whose name the puppy’s registration will be issued.
  • Ask whether the registration carries any restriction. The AKC asks for a certificate without restrictions.
  • Ask how the change of owner is recorded in the ACCC’s books, since the AKC wants the same owner in both registries.

Keep in mind what a pedigree is: a record of ancestry. It tells you who the dog descends from; it does not tell you anything about health. For that you need the parents’ health test results, which is a separate set of documents. How to tell if a dog breeder is reputable and questions to ask a dog breeder cover both.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AKC accept FCI pedigrees?

The AKC says the FCI is not an acceptable registry, because it is an organization made up of national registries that each issue their own pedigrees. What the AKC accepts or not is the national registry. Its list of accepted foreign registries includes Colombia’s Asociación Club Canino Colombiano, so a pedigree issued by the ACCC can support an application.

What documents does the AKC need for a dog born in Colombia?

A complete, certified three-generation pedigree and an unrestricted registration certificate from the ACCC, both translated into English; the same owner on the AKC application as in the ACCC’s records; permanent identification such as a microchip; and two color photographs. The dog must be of a breed the AKC registers and be physically in the United States.

Can I register a puppy from Colombia with the AKC before it travels?

No. One of the AKC’s conditions for foreign registration is that the dog is physically in the United States. Since the CDC requires every dog to be at least six months old to enter the country, and adds further conditions for dogs vaccinated in Colombia, the dog will be at least that old before it can apply.

Does the Canadian Kennel Club accept ACCC pedigrees?

We could not verify it. The Canadian Kennel Club registers foreign-born dogs from registries whose stud book it recognizes, but we were not able to read that list. Separately, the CFIA has prohibited commercial dogs from Colombia since September 28, 2022, and it counts dogs transferred to another person, bred or shown as commercial.
